Body Image

這是我在去年進階英語會話課的教案,學生的反應還挺不錯。

Purpose:
To increase each student's awareness of his/her physical self and of media influences on her/his self-image and behavior.

Materials:
可以剪貼人物的流行雜誌(如VIVI,GQ,VICTORIA'S SECRET); 剪刀膠水; 四開空白圖畫紙(每組兩張,每組2至3人) 和兩支麥克筆; masking tape(可用.可不用)

Time:
About an hour

Planning Notes:(以每組3-4人為例)
(1) 準備好雜誌及所有材料(每組2或3本)。
(2) 分組時要注意將喜歡討論和較安靜的組員分同一組,以增加互動。

Introduce about the activity: (About 5 minutes)

Activity - Part one (About 10 minutes)
(1)Make a list on one piece of paper of the parts of the body that people of your gender often feel dissatisfied with. Label your list Men often do not like… or Women often do not like…

(2)Using two or three magazines, find pictures of members of your sex that you think are attractive. Make a collage of these pictures or your own drawings on the other piece of newsprint. Add words or phrases that describe an attractive member of your own sex.

(3)When you have finished the collage, tape both the list and the collage side by side on the walls.

Activity - Part two (About 15 minutes)
(1)Then request everyone's attention. Ask students to walk around the room. read the lists, and look at the collages. (5 minutes)

(2)Ask everyone to take a seat. Summarize what you see on the lists and ask thoughtful questions about what the lists and collages.

For example, if several male lists include height, you might say and ask the following: I notice that several groups of young men listed height as one thing men often do not like about their bodies. I see lots of tall men in the collages. What does that say about men who are short or of medium height? Can they still be attractive? Why do you think that only tall men are attractive? (10 minutes)

Activity – Part three (About 20 minutes)

Discussion Points:
1.Do you think that women or men are generally more satisfied with their bodies? Why?

2.Are you affected by other people's opinions about your body? How do you know what their opinions are? After knowing their opinions, will you try to change some parts of your body? Why or why not?

3.Do media images influence how attractive we feel? Does the behavior of people toward we are attracted influence how we feel? [If the students respond that the attitudes and behaviors of people of the opposite sex influence how they feel, be sure to point out that not everyone is romantically interested in someone of the opposite sex.]

4.If people are dissatisfied with what they look, should they have the plastic surgery? After the plastic surgery, have they really changed? Are they better people? What problems will they meet after many years pass by?

5.What things can we do to feel better about our bodies? [Answers should include supporting each other, paying less attention to media images, talking to a counselor.]
